UNDERSTANDING BODYBUILDING
Your Guide to NPC Categories
Bodybuilding is a sport that judges competitors based on the aesthetic quality of their muscle development, symmetry, and stage presentation. Choosing the right category is the first step toward the stage.
Men’s Divisions
Men’s Physique
Judged on a lean, symmetrical “beach body” physique, with competitors wearing board shorts. Emphasis is on V-taper, shoulder-to-waist ratio, and a polished stage presence. Legs are not a primary focus.
Men’s Classic Physique
A blend of aesthetics and mass. Competitors must meet specific height-to-weight ratios, showcasing classic proportions similar to the “Golden Era” of bodybuilding with a focus on muscularity, conditioning, and artful posing.
Men’s Bodybuilding
The ultimate division for mass, size, and conditioning. Competitors are judged on muscularity, symmetry, and detail from head to toe. Poses are used to showcase every muscle group, highlighting peak development.
Women’s Divisions
Women’s Bikini
Judged on a lean, fit physique with emphasis on balanced proportions, muscle tone, and stage presence. The look is soft and athletic, not overly muscular or conditioned. Posing is graceful and highlights overall shape.
Women’s Wellness
A newer division for those with a more developed and muscular lower body (glutes, quads) and a toned, symmetrical upper body. A fuller look than Bikini, with a focus on round, powerful glutes and thighs.
Women’s Figure
Judged on a lean, athletic look with significant muscularity, symmetry, and definition. Poses are more rigid and focused on showcasing muscle separation and a clear V-taper.
Women’s Physique
Judged on a lean, muscular physique with more muscle mass and conditioning than Figure. Competitors perform a choreographed routine to music in addition to mandatory poses to highlight their physique.
Women’s Bodybuilding
The highest level of female muscular development. Judged on mass, symmetry, and condition with free posing routines. This division rewards the highest degree of muscle size and striations.
Fit Model
A performance-based division that judges an athletic and marketable physique, incorporating runway modeling, quarter turns, and a high-fashion evening wear segment. It’s about presence as much as physique.
Evaluating a Bikini Physique
Judges evaluate a competitor’s physique based on a combination of muscle tone, shape, and overall presentation. Key elements of a winning look include:
- Strong Points: A small, tight waist and a balanced, aesthetic “X-frame” or “hourglass” shape are highly valued.
- Weak Points: A lack of sufficient conditioning (being too soft) or needing more overall glute development are common areas for improvement.

Training Goes Beyond a Plan
A bodybuilding preparation is a highly individualized process that goes far beyond a generic training schema. The requirements for your training and cardio are dictated by your specific genetics, your current physique, and the category you’re preparing for. Category-Specific Focus
For a Bikini competitor, for example, a significant portion of training will be dedicated to developing and shaping the glutes and shoulders to create the desired aesthetic. In contrast, a Men’s Bodybuilding prep will require comprehensive, high-volume work for every muscle group.
Customized Cardio Requirements
Cardio isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The type and amount of cardio will be carefully adjusted week by week based on how your body responds to the diet. It’s a precise tool used to achieve the right level of conditioning without sacrificing muscle mass.
The Importance of Posing
No matter the category, posing practice is non-negotiable. Posing allows you to present your physique in the best possible light. For categories like Bikini and Classic Physique, posing is a major component of the final score.
How Judges Score Competitors
While each division has unique standards, all bodybuilding categories are judged on a few core principles. These are the elements you must perfect to succeed on stage:
Symmetry & Proportions
A balanced physique where all muscle groups are equally developed from top to bottom and side to side.
Conditioning
The degree of leanness and muscle definition. This is the result of proper diet leading up to the show.
Muscularity
The overall size and shape of the muscles, relative to the specific category’s standards.
